Due to demand we’re growing our UK team to support our bid side customers with ADVANCE™ and our expert services. Our latest recruit is Alex Porteous who has joined us in the role of Senior Consultant.
His main focus will be supporting bidders to improve the competitiveness of their offering. We get to know a bit about Alex and what his new responsibilities will entail in these quick fire questions below.
Why did you decide to join Commerce Decisions?
I’d been working in the civil/defence bid space for a number of years and had recently moved into the role of Competitive Intelligence and Position to Win. I’d met some members of the CD team during some workshops. After learning about CD capabilities on both sides of the fence I thought “That sounds like an interesting position to be in!” After meeting other people during the interview process, it became clear that the culture and direction of the business was a great fit.
What are you doing in your new role?
I’m working as a Senior Consultant, primarily on the bid side, so helping bidders improve their proposals is my main objective. I’m helping to expand and deepen our offering around Competitive Intelligence and Position to Win to help bidders score better, price smartly and improve the competitiveness of their offering to customers.
What have you enjoyed most so far about working at Commerce Decisions?
Well, it’s been an unusual start given that I’d been enduring lockdown prior to joining up until the end of April. As a result I’ve been working remotely along with the services team, getting to learn about the ways we can support our customers during this time. I would like to highlight the warm welcome I’ve received despite not having been able to meet many of the team in person yet.
What are you most looking forward to?
I’m looking forward to getting different perspectives on all elements of bidding, from our wide range of customers on both the buy and bid side of the business. After a long period working for just one bidder, getting more experience of the variation of deployments available will be a welcome change.
What’s your background?
I was lucky enough to go through both the O2 and Orange sales schools during/before university which gave me a really good start to understanding the benefits of technology solutions. I studied Computer Science at uni before going on to work in delivery roles in software development and architecture at Leidos/Lockheed Martin. Around four years ago I swapped delivery for Capture and worked in Business Development and Capture Manager roles before leading the Competitive Intelligence function for Leidos UK.
What motivates you?
Constantly learning and trying to better what I have done before.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I have a 2 year old daughter Lottie, who keeps my partner Stacey and I on our feet most of the time. When I’m not running after her, I’m into sport of all types but rugby, strength training and running are my focus at the moment. I’m in the process of converting my garage into a gym as they’ve been shut during lockdown and I seem to have replaced the time I spent in the gym with time eating!
What one thing are you currently trying to make a habit?
Cooking from scratch – with more time at home and no restaurants open, I’ve had no excuse so have been trying to expand my repertoire and use less jars!
