Get to know how Sam spends her spare time, what role she plays in the Commerce Decisions machine and why she’s taken to running bee hotels.
When and why did you decide to join Commerce Decisions?
I joined Commerce Decisions in 2008 when I relocated to Oxfordshire. I explored various opportunities but the culture and people at CD won me over and I made the right choice because that remains true to this day. I started as a Business Development Executive, got promoted to Business Development Manager in 2011, became MOD Account Manager in 2014 and then got promoted to my current role as MOD account Director in 2017.
What are your main responsibilities?
As the MOD Account Director, my main responsibility is managing account strategy for the MOD. I support project managers and help them see the value of Commerce Decisions and AWARD® within the DSP. Along with the MOD Account Manager Ian Wiseman, I work to ensure we are contacting teams at the right time to support them on their projects and ensure they are getting the best Return on Investment from their contract with us and getting best practice advice from our expert consultants to support on their procurements. To me, every procurement within the MOD is just as important as another so I want to ensure project teams are getting the best possible service, every single time.
What was your background before you joined Commerce Decisions?
I’ve bounced around a few jobs. When I left school I worked as a scuba diver instructor in Corfu for a couple of years before returning to the UK. I then took up a sales role for a newspaper and magazine publisher, selling advertising space. I eventually turned my hand to corporate sales of fleet vehicles with companies like Renault and Honda which eventually led me to Commerce Decisions.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
For me, it’s all about spending time with family. Any excuse to have a big family gathering and I’ll take it. Not being able to see my wider family over the past year or so has really made me appreciate them more so now I take every opportunity to spend time with them.
What’s one thing you’re learning now, and why is it important?
I am currently learning about conservation and protection of our countryside, something which is very important to me. At home I have three bee hotels set up and it fascinates me watching them build their nests, collecting leaves and pollen from the garden where I have planted vast amounts of bee and butterfly friendly flowers.
What’s an accomplishment that you’re really proud of?
I’m proud of where I’ve got to in my career having overcome the adversities that come with being a woman and being gay in a male dominated industry. I’ve come across many challenges throughout my life and career but never let that hold me back. I’m also proud of my personal achievements including various qualifications and sporting achievements, winning leagues and cups with my football team, as well as marrying my wonderful wife and having a beautiful daughter.
What’s one thing you’re currently trying to make a habit?
Getting outside every day. Another thing that the pandemic has made me value even more! I try to make a conscious effort to schedule in breaks during the day to get outside for a walk. It helps having 3 energetic Labradors who need constant walking!
